AIDSVu: Be a Superhero on National Latinx AIDS Awareness Day

National Latinx AIDS Awareness Day (NLAAD), observed each year on October 15, is an opportunity to raise awareness of the disproportionate impact that HIV has on the Latinx population in the United States. This year’s NLAAD theme, “Be a Superhero. Defeat HIV,” highlights the important role of both individuals and communities – a team of superheroes – in defeating HIV.

In honor of this important day, we’re proud to feature a blog post from AIDSVu Advisory Committee member Guillermo Chacón, President of the Latino Commission on AIDS and Founder of the Hispanic Health Network.

Despite representing 17% of the population, Hispanics/Latinx accounted for 24% of all new HIV diagnoses in the U.S. in 2015. This means that Hispanics/Latinx were three times more likely to be diagnosed with HIV than their non-Hispanic white counterparts in 2015.
