New York, NY. Monday, December 11th, 2017. Today, the Latino Commission on AIDS and the Hispanic Health Network released our Latinas and HIV in NYC Health Brief. Members of multiple programs and departments of the Latino Commission on AIDS worked to develop this important brief, led by Gabriela S. Betancourt, MA, MPH, Deputy Director of Research and Evaluation.
The brief highlights the challenges in addressing the impact of HIV and AIDS among cis and trans Latinas, including the role of institutional stigma and barriers to engaging community members. The brief provides a fresh perspective on the urgency of developing diverse, strategic investments and efforts needed to engage Latinas to best address the impact of HIV.
“Addressing health disparities in HIV among Latinas of both transgender and cisgender experiences is critical to ending the epidemic. It is important that these disparities are contextualized for public health interventions to be most effective,” stated Ms. Betancourt.
“We hope to contribute to a better understanding of the complex challenges Latinas face in our city and the urgent need to develop comprehensive and culturally-responsive strategies to address HIV, access to quality healthcare, and other health conditions that disproportionately impact Latinas in NYC,”-stated Guillermo Chacon, President of the Latino Commission on AIDS and founder of the Hispanic health Network.
